After years of refusing to deal with synthetic diamonds, 2018 De Beers shocked the industry with the launch of its own lab-grown diamond jewelry brand, Light Box.

The decision, CEO Bruce Cleaver told the Financial Times earlier this month, was spurred by rising sales of US lab-grown diamonds.

So far, lab-grown diamonds only account for about 2% of the overall diamond jewelry market.

California’s Diamond Foundry, backed by Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Silicon Valley investors, is among dozens of lab-grown diamond producers to emerge over the last decade.

ABN AMRO Bank, in a report this month, said the lab-grown diamonds for the jewelry segment of the industry is entering the growth phase, fueled by consumers’ growing demand for cheaper alternatives.
